Division: The Space Between "Us" and "Them"

How do notions of "us" and "them" become salient, such that they may mobilize hostility both in attitudes and action? Here, I am particularly interested in (1) the structure, (2) foundations, and (3) malleability of these divisions.

Political Extremism and Extremist Groups

How do extremist groups organize, instigate, and sustain mobilization? I examine these extremist discourse, social networks, and emergent collective action (including violence) using both open-source event and digital trace data.

Predicting and Preventing Mass Atrocities

What political, economic, cultural, and social conditions affect the incidence of mass atrocities? This strand of my work identifies pertinent risk factors alongside the strategies most effective in curbing that risk.
